Here's what we're learning this week!

Math-Dividing fractions
Reading- We are continuing with our text The Most Beautiful Roof in the World.
Writing- We are working on our hooks and conclusion for our inventors writing piece.
Science- Matter-solids, liquids, and gases

*Math Inventory and Reading Inventory will be taken the week of December 11th. Please encourage your student to do their best! We want to see growth with EVERY score!

Week of November 27th


Welcome back! We hope that you had a wonderful break with your family and friends! 


Here's what we're doing this week:
Math-test over multiplying fraction on Tuesday. Starting on Wednesday, we will begin dividing fractions.
Reading- We are continuing our study of The Most Beautiful Roof in the World.
Writing- We are continuing our work on our inventor's writing piece. 
Social Studies -How did technological and scientific developments affect people's lives in the late 1800's ?

Reminders:
*Tomorrow (Tuesday) is our field trip to Lassiter High School to see the Atlanta Symphony. Please make sure your child has a signed permission form!

*This Thursday is our Rock Eagle information meeting at 6:00. In addition, the 5th grade performance is at 6:30. Please see the following from Mr. Wehr.


Message from Mr. Wehr:

This year the 5th grade musical is entitled ONCE ON A HOUSETOP. In this international holiday celebration you’ll join a group of chimney sweeps as they sing across the rooftops of the city and discover all the different ways people celebrate the winter holidays. The 5th grade students playing the part of chimney sweeps should wear all black or dark blue for the performances Thursday 11/30/2017 (8:15-8:45am, 9:00-930am & 6:30-7:00pm) in the cafeteria. Those students who are stage managers and light crew should also wear all dark colors. The rest of the 5th grade students should wear something festive for the winter holidays (La Posada, Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa). Please remember all students will need their uniforms after the morning performances. 


* 4 H is also this Friday, December 1st

Parents,

Week of November 6th!

November is here and we are busier than ever! Thanksgiving break is right around the corner!

Here's what we're learning this week!

Math- Multiplying and dividing fractions
Reading- Informational text and their features
Writing- Informational writing on an inventor
Social Studies- How did technological and scientific developments affect people's lives in the late 1800's?
Science- What is matter?

** We have many students that are not turning in completed assignments. These assignments will be a 50 in the grade book until they are completed!

Week of October 30th



Here's what we're learning this week!

Math-adding and subtracting with unlike denominators
Reading- Over the next few weeks we will be learning about text structures. This week we are learning about sequence of events.
Writing- We're in the beginning stages of informational writing!
Social Studies- The Plains Indians and their struggles with the U.S. government
Science- constructive and destructive forces

+++ Our Science test is this Thursday! The study guide was sent home with everyone today! We are asking that every student study for at least fifteen minutes every night. Each night that they get your signature is worth 10 Dojo points!!

Reading Night-Thursday, November 2nd from 6:00-7:00
Tuesday, November 7th- No school Election day
Friday, December 1st- 4-H meeting Nalaymi and Devonte will be presenting!

Week of 10/16

It's conference week! Students will be released 2 hours early each day this week! We are excited about meeting with each of you and discussing your child's progress!

Since it is conference week, we will not be having our weekly spelling words!

Here's what we're learning this week!
Math-Multiplying and dividing decimals
Reading- StoryWorks article, "The Evil Swirling Darkness". We are learning more about text evidence and how to answer questions that show text evidence.
Writing- Mentor sentences from the book "Do Unto Otters". Mentor sentences are sentences that we introduce daily to the students. The sentences are written correctly and we discuss why they are written the way they are. At the end of the week, we quiz the students on those same sentences to see that they learned  the material we covered.
Social Studies- Civil War people and the major events that took place during the war.

Here's what we're learning this week!

Math- multiplying and dividing decimals using models
Reading- We are continuing with Esperanza Rising.
Writing- We will be wrapping up our opinion essay on fidget spinners!
Science- Constructive and Destructive forces
Social Studies- Civil War

Please remember that this Thursday is early release. Students will be released at 12:30.

Also, next week is conference week. We look forward to meeting with each of you and discussing your child's progress so far this year.

A big "Thank You" to all who came out to support the Fall Festival. We appreciate your support. A great time was had by all!

Alejandra and James will be presenting at our 4-H meeting on Friday, October 27th.

Week of October 2nd!

Can you believe it is October already??? We can't! Time is flying by! The end of the 9 weeks is quickly approaching. Please encourage your child to continue to do his or her very best!!

This week we will be doing the following:
Math: We are learning about decimals: comparing and adding and subtracting
Reading: Esperanza Rising Chapters 8-11
Writing: We will be starting opinion writing. We will be reading an article about whether or not fidget spinners should be in school and then writing an opinion paper.
Science: Constructive and Destructive forces
Social Studies: Reconstruction

Week of 9/18/17

This week we are finishing up the ITBS testing! Hooray! 

Wednesday through Friday we will be doing the following:
Math- division with two digit divisors and multi-digit dividends
Reading- Storyworks story, "Freddie in the Shade"
Writing- Reading/Writing response to "Freddie in the Shade"
Social Studies-The US Constitution
Science- Georgia Land forms, Constructive and Destructive forces


Upcoming Events:

  • Picture Day is this Friday, September 22nd
  • 4-H is this Friday, September 22nd! Jay and Rowan will be presenting!
  • Fall Break is next week, September 25th-29th. There is NO school next week! Enjoy and be safe!

Classroom Behavior:
We will be implementing a new behavior information sheet in our classroom. Instruction time is very precious and we need your support to make sure that your child is being on their best behavior. If your child receives one of the behavior sheets, it will be stapled inside their agenda. Please discuss your child's behavior with them. It is extremely important that we have your support with this!!!!  

The secret word this week is SNICKER-DOODLES. Please have your child tell us the secret word for 10 Class Dojo points! The class winner will be announced next week!

Week of 9-11-17

Welcome back from a CrAzY long weekend! We hope this finds you and your family safe and well!

This week we will begin our IOWA testing. Due to hurricane Irma, we will begin testing on Thursday, September 14th. Testing will continue until Tuesday, September 19th. Please make sure that your child is here on time! It is very difficult to make this test up and puts extra stress on your child if they miss it! 

In addition to testing, this week we will continue with division in Math, Esperanza Rising in Reading, types of sentences in grammar, and Pangaea in Science. We will also touch on September 11th and what that day means for our country.

The secret word this week is IRMA! Have your student tell us the secret word for 10 Class Dojo points!

Constitution Day- Monday, September 18th (Activities throughout the week)

Week of August 28th

Week of August 28th!

What we're learning this week!

Math- We're finishing up with area model and will start standard algorithm on Tuesday. 

Reading- We're starting Esperanza Rising this week. We will be discussing story elements from the book over the next few weeks. Ask your child about what they've learned so far!

Social Studies- We're continuing with the Civil War. We are learning about some of the major battles that occurred during the war.  

Science- We will be learning about the Earth's layers, Pangaea, and plate tectonics.  

Spelling- Spelling words this week have the long i, long o. This week's test will be on Friday!

4-H: Every 4-H meeting two students will be chosen to take part in the 4-H oral presentation project. These students will need to chose a topic, research their topic, and deliver that information to our class. We are excited to see what Rowan and Jay are going to present at our next meeting on September 22nd. 

Also, 4-H enrollment forms are being sent home on Tuesday. Please return those as soon as possible! 


Upcoming Events:
Early Release this Wednesday, August 30th. Students are dismissed 2 hours early.
Labor Day is Monday, September 4th. There is no school on Labor Day!
Fall Break is September 25-29th! 


The secret word this week is CHEETOS. Have your child tell one of us the secret word and they will earn 10 Dojo points! :)

Week of August 21st

Parents,
Thank you for reading our posts! We truly appreciate all of you who take time out of your busy schedule to see what we are doing in class! If you are reading this, please have your child come to class and give us the "secret" word. The secret word this week is: Bill of Rights Your child will receive 10 Dojo points when they tell us the secret word! There will be a new word every week. 

What we are learning:

Math- We're finishing up order of operations and we are starting expressions. Later this week we will begin using manipulatives to show multi-digit multiplication. 

Reading- This week we are integrating Social Studies into our reading time. We will be discussing the Bill of Rights and what they mean to us.

Writing- We are using a graphic organizer to organize our thoughts for our Narrative writing piece. 

Science- We talked about the Solar Eclipse today and we will be starting 4H this week also! 

Spelling- We're in the process of rolling out our new spelling curriculum. Your child came home with their list of spelling words today. Spelling tests will be on Fridays!

Upcoming Events:
Thursday is Chick-Fil-A night from 5:00-8:00. This is our dunk tank night and it is super fun to watch! Ms. Fender will be representing the 5th grade! She is such an awesome sport!
